This blog has become an important life force for me. The writing is cathartic, and it is an easy way for me to disseminate information to those I care about and who care about me. What I want to emphasize, however, is how important your comments are to me. I've hassled the stealth blog readers, you know who you are, who read but never write a comment. I have to say that it is those of you who put yourselves out there on the blog who helped me face the devastating news that the "stuff" in my right lung is diffuse malignant tumor. Dr. Scheinberg and his colleagues were shocked at the results of the pathology report. It is no reassurance that the pattern of disease in my right lung is highly unusual, but it's a fact, Jack.

I am not afraid. I am choosing to fight with the weapons available to me. I have been meeting and talking with doctors, and the current plan is to stay the course with the carboplatin and alimta. Of course, there could some adjustments to that plan. One of the other changes in the works for sure is to make more of each day. I have been spending most of my time alone, often in my bedroom, trying to heal my body. Instead, I am going to seek out more company and make more forays out into the world, even if it's just for lunch or a milkshake, or to the office to help out. Maybe even a movie. Ann Silver will help me set up the calendar on the lotsahelpinghands website.

Please know that your cards, letters, emails, visits and calls are also vitally important to me. There is just something about this blog that connects me to you, and keeps me moving forward.

Stay strong for me. I am staying strong for you.

Ali - of course all of us true bigtime fans of yours, John and Brent which have been established far in advance of 2008, would do anything for you. I am sure that I can speak for all of us regular bloggers - We are just glad it can make you feel even an ounce stronger. As you know Elyse I have made the correlation early on of your setbacks to the famous fighter M. Ali who had many himself and continues to. Your battle/journey continues to be a daily reminder of someone who can emote the highest level of inspiration and strength. I am glad to tell you that my mini battle is over as I did sign a tentative agreement with a Lisbon based company. Even mundane issues as work stuff were insignificant when ever my thoughts turned to you and your family multiple times a day... I hope you know all this..

The big rumor is that Bill Clinton could be a possible replacement for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat when she becomes secretary of state. I believe this would be the first time Bill has ever shown any interest in Hillary's seat.

So, you go from a Clinton in pantsuits to a Clinton who drops his suit pants.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said in a recent interview that Republicans cannot be the “old white-guy party.” I believe he made this statement at the National Shuffleboard Convention in Boca Raton, Fla.

President Bush gave an interview to ABC News. Bush said he wished "the intelligence on Iraq had been different." Hey — how many wish the intelligence in the White House had been different?

Britney Spears turns 27 today. That’s almost grandmother age for the Spearses.

“Britney Spears” were the most-searched words of the year on Yahoo!, followed by “World Wrestling Federation,” and in third place, “Barack Obama.” I think the lesson here is that Americans are not responsible enough to be using computers.

Yahoo! also reported the top 10 searches by Britney Spears. No. 1 was “Where do babies keep coming from?”

This is the biggest shopping day of the year. Good news for the economy: So far, four shoppers have shown up.

I bet a friend that by New Year’s Eve, the Dow Jones will be lower than my cholesterol.

At the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Santa and his elves were marching down Broadway. Tomorrow, they’re going down to Washington to get some of that bailout money.

I love Thanksgiving. If there’s one thing Americans need, it’s a day set aside for them to stuff themselves with food.

The malls were packed on Friday. All those women fighting and screaming and shoving . . . it’s like an episode of “The View.”

Last Friday was Black Friday. If you had money in the stock market, today is Black Monday.

Today was the big day for online shopping. It's known as Cyber Monday. And of course, tomorrow is Identity Theft Tuesday.

This week, they will flip the switch on the White House Christmas tree, which has 25,000 lights on it . . . one for every CEO who's looking for a bailout.

They say that during Hillary Clinton’s appointment confirmation hearings, Republicans could force her to answer a lot of embarrassing questions about Bill Clinton's financial affairs, to which Hillary said, "What kind of affairs? Financial? No problem! Bring it on!"

I've been wrestling with so many questions since last night. Like, did the cancer in this lung exist when they took the other? If so, how could they have missed it between here and Houston? Questions lead to more questions and to agony and anger. But early this morning I realized that none of those questions, nor their answers, matter. What matters is today and what you do now and from here on out to continue fighting this unimaginable thing that has happened to you. One step at a time, we'll continue this walk with you, surrounding you with the love and support you so richly deserve.

You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
(well you are a beauty - Bruce just never met you).

So I've been a bit guilty of lurking. You can and will kick ass, and we will again be drinking martinis and talking politics (the good guys won, yay!), law, and every other little thing.

Lets get down to fun stuff! I loved the movie Twilight--I heard books were better but I have no time to read anything but text books:) The movie Australia looks amazing--Hugh Jackman. Stony River poppyseed rolls with a milkshake? Or Ippolitos rolls? Hmmm. Both good and at least 100 calories a bite! Massage--by a well built 25 yr old with a tan:) Manicure with the wildest color on the shelf. Go to shops that you never went to but wanted to --because you were too busy! Gossip.

Then you'll be pumped and ready to go on to that next stage of treatments. Cant wait to see--LOVE YOU! Bridgette

Okay. Let me see now. I have the meal on December 17. 59 year old single guy who's idea of cooking is Trader Joe's frozen meals. Will an ailing attorney like bologna sandwiches? Is spam and cheese an acceptable meal if accompanied by a salad? I''ll have to give this a lot of thought. In regard to culinary issues, you might be amused at this. I was at a wedding reception in Baltimore for 2 of my clients. A Jewish guy and a Korean woman. I was in the buffet line behind a Korean couple who were friends of the bride. In the buffet server before them were delicious looking blintzes with a Raspberry sauce on the side. As I eavesdropped on them, they had a surprised tone as they tried to figure out why someone would serve meat dumplings with a fruit sauce. I explained the concept of blintzes to them and they were extremely appreciative. I love my cross-cultural practice.

What to say? Crap! Shit! I'm so sorry you've been thrown this curve ball! All I know is that if anyone can hit it out of the park, it's you. You've shown over and over again how to beat the odds with grace and dignity.

We saw "Wicked" for the first time recently and thoughts of you popped into my head while listening to a wonderful song called Defying Gravity. In the scene, Elphaba, the (not so) Wicked Witch of the West, is learning to fly on her broomstick, despite the seeming impossibility of overcoming gravity. The lyrics were so empowering, and so uplifting, and so... all about you.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
And you can't pull me down...

Elyse, I know you've been "defying gravity" for a long time now, and I know how exhausted you must feel. But you've got strength and determination like no other, and I know you'll ultimately prevail.

We're all here for you...

There's no fight we cannot win
Just you and I
Defying gravity
With you and I
Defying gravity

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday. I'll be sure to bring something especially decadent and yummy for dessert.

Elyse - There are so many ways to try to explore the reasons for "this," ranging from the realm of the spiritual to the frontiers of Western medicine. But in spite of all the research, studies, data, and deep collective soul searching, we will never, ever understand "this." Why you? Why now? Why, why why??
What we do know is that health is random and fleeting. We must never stop trying to understand the mysteries of the human body. We must cherish our health when it is good, and do everything we can to bring it back to a good place when it goes astray.
Elyse - keep doing what you are doing. You will break the barriers.

Ali .. I can say the same for you..

"It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself..."

M. Ali..

Now a couple topical economy jokes for you to chuckle..

President Bush and his lovely wife Laura have purchased a new home in Dallas, Texas, worth $2 million. People have underestimated this guy. Five months ago he would had to pay $10 million for that house. But thanks to his economic plan he got it at a bargain.

How does that work, when the president applies for a home loan? When they do a credit check, do they include the trillion-dollar deficit?

The economy is pretty bad right now. Today I saw a guy put a foreclosed sign on a house, and while he was doing that, another guy came by and repossessed his car.

In fact, you know what is the highest paying line of work in America right now? Jury duty

Dear Dear Elyse,

I just returned from a birthday visit with my aunt, (my mother's sister), in Detroit -- and my first look at the computer upon my return was your blog. I am overcome with sadness at your news, and at the same time am again so inspired by your courage and hold dearly our visit last Sunday. Elyse, there are those things in life which make absolutely no sense and are completely unfair and unjust --and then there are the choices we make about how we live with what is given to us..Your outlook, your commitment to life and your choices to share with so many of us and to allow us to be there for you--and you for so many-- are indeed an inspiration and a gift. I will look @ Ann's website &/or call you soon to see when you're up for another visit soon...I think so much about your comments about how "intense" our experiences were in Amirah--and though I haven't stayed so closely connected, I do feel the deep connection and I am so so moved as I read the notes and such love by so many of your dear friends from Amirah days. With much love, Wendy

I am so thrilled to hear from Liz an Neil about the pill your doctors and Anderson want you to take. This is such great news as the pill has such a high sucess rate. In all honesty, I never doubted your chances of beating this disease, but this news has strengthened my hope even more. Your future looks so bright. I am elated for you. And so what if you get a rash on your face! At our age, a rash is the least of our problems. Remember when we all used to strip down in Liz and Neil's bedroom and try on Suzanne's clothes that she was selling? You always had the best figure of anyone. Now, at 49, if you saw me naked you would probably gag. But you know what? who cares!!! Rashes, flabby skin. . . bring it on!! I am so happy that this new treatment has become available for you. I love you.

This is not the time for apologies for not keeping up with your Gigantic Adventure. Shoulda, woulda, couldas don't do Elyse Aussenberg any justice.
What is important is that you and your family are loved by so many people who give their all to help make your journey stronger as you keep moving toward complete recovery. Sure there are times that you feel like turning back, but instead just sit on a ledge to take in all the beauty around; the laughter from all the jokes, the tears when friends urge you that you can do this, the love you feel everyday for yourself that wants to make the world a better place.
This new setback is only a temporary time for you to sit back and admire all of your accomplishments; 2 wonderful men, a mega successful law career, friends that you have had since grammar school, friends that you have amassed since sitting in alphabetical order, a loving family that loves you no matter what you say or do,travelling adventures each packed with fun, endurance and relaxation.
Now that this hairpin turn is ahead and you are rested and ready for another challenge, your friends in cyberville are rooting for you all the way.
I love you Elyse and will continue to keep you in my prayers.

I've been one of those anonymous followers who reads the blogs religiously, follows your progress closely, but often replies anonymously. I have been dealing with the ups and downs of my mom's brain tumor and I am becoming horribly sensitive to the frustration of dealing with doctors all the time who often don't sense the urgency of responding quickly or at least when they say they will. No matter what they say, the job always seems to fall to the patient to keep after the doctors. I hate that its that way and I hate that they often become so desensitized to the common emotions of their patients. Every minute they put off calling feels like a year.

You are the toughest, most upbeat patient i can imagine, and are an inspiration to all of us. My thoughts never stray far from you and I know you are going to beat this.
